Grandmothers
Grandmother’s Prayer for January 22nd
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, You told us that Jesus' blood speaks better things than Abel's blood. Hebrews 12:24. Abel's blood cried out for justice. Jesus' blood speaks mercy from Your throne.
I have had years when both of those felt true at the same time. The wrongs done to me in this long life still want their hearing. Some mornings, I notice them in the chair beside me, just waiting to remind me.
But then there is the other blood. The one that speaks better things. And the better things include forgiveness. Forgiveness for the people who sat in that chair. And forgiveness from me toward the people I have sat beside in their lives.
I do not have the strength to fight over any of it at this age. And I do not have the interest either. Let the better speech keep speaking over the lesser. Let Your mercy be louder than the memory.
Keep me from holding on to small grudges in a life that does not have many more years to carry them. I would rather be fed by Your mercy than by the old stories I keep telling myself.
Amen.
