Grandmother’s Prayer for January 21st

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, the tree of life was in the middle of the garden. Genesis 2:9. We always remember the other tree, the one with the trouble in it. But this morning I sat with the one we forget. It was there too. It was right in the middle. Eden had a real tree of life, and it stood available. After the fall, it was guarded. But in Revelation, it is back, on either side of the river, for the healing of the nations. So You have not given up on the tree. Help me eat from it today. The bread Your Son broke for me is from that tree. The words of life He spoke are from that tree. I do not have to reach far. The tree is closer than I keep expecting it to be. The fruit in this morning's chapter of John is enough fruit for breakfast. Keep me from wandering among the other trees of comparison and worry, looking for food they cannot give. The garden has been complicated for a long time. But the tree of life is still in it. Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
