Grandmother’s Prayer for January 20th
A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, Abel was a keeper of sheep. Genesis 4:2. Before the sad story in this chapter, there is this quiet verse. Abel had ordinary work. He had ordinary days. Let me see my own ordinary days that way this morning. I am a keeper of small things. The plants on the sill. The name on my prayer list. The meal I will cook when the family comes. These are not big offerings, but they are offerings. The writer of Hebrews says You received Abel's gift because of his faith, not because of its size. Receive these small things by that same faith today. Let my keeping be done in You. Let me not look at someone else's life and wish it were mine. The work in front of me is the work You gave me, and there is plenty there to keep me busy until evening. Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
