Grandmother’s Prayer for January 18th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, Your Word says there is a rest that still remains for Your people. Hebrews 4:9. That word 'remains' has a stubborn quality I love. It did not run out. The Israelites missed it and it was still there. Generations missed it and it was still there. I almost missed it for whole stretches of my adult life, and it was still there. It is still there for me this morning.

This rest is not finally about a vacation week or a quiet afternoon. It is about Your finished work and stopping my own work. It is trusting that what You did in Christ is enough. I am slow to take that rest some days, even now. The busy part of me is hard to put down. I liked myself best when I was doing things.

Help me put that busy self down without being angry at her. She did the best she knew. The rest is real and waiting. It has already begun in this very room, in the chair where I am sitting, in my willingness to be quiet a few more minutes before the day gets loud.

Let me practice that kind of rest today. Let me not trade it for hurry that is only a habit of striving.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
