Grandmother’s Prayer for January 15th

A short, Scripture-shaped grandmothers prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, David once took Your own promise and prayed it right back to You. I want to do that too. For most of my life, I have prayed too politely. I have cut Your promises down to what seemed safe to ask. I am tired of editing. So now I say, Do as You have said. You have prepared a home for Your people. You have promised that those who belong to You will reign with You. You have promised new heavens and a new earth where there will be no more crying and no more pain. I am still trusting You for the wandering one I love. I am not leaning on anything but what You have already said. I will not make up promises You never gave. I will just stop softening the ones You did give. Let my prayers today have some of David's nerve. Not because I am bold. But because You have been so faithful for so long that pretending You have not would just wear me out. Amen.

  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
