Dads
Dad’s Prayer for December 23rd
A short, Scripture-shaped dads prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father,
Jesus said to take the lower seat at the table, so the host might say, friend, come up higher. That is not a trick. It is humility. People who grab the head seat wear everyone out, even themselves.
I have been grabbing high seats too. In talks where I make sure my view wins. In rooms where I act like I am the one in charge. At my own table, where I want to be the quiet boss. Those seats are not mine to keep.
Send me to the lower place this week. Not to play humble. But to live that way. Help me listen first. Let me give space to younger people. Let me be okay with not being the smartest one there.
Lord Jesus, You took the lowest seat by being born in a stable. Help me follow You today. If I am lifted up, You will do it. I do not have to grab.
Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
Verses to pray
Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.
But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes, he may tell you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you.
Luke 14:10
