Dad's Prayer for December 7th

A short, Scripture-shaped dads prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, 1 Corinthians 1:28 says You have chosen things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are. You pick the unimpressive on purpose. The shepherds at the manger. The fishermen in the boats. The tax collector at the desk. Not because they were impressive, but because they were not.

I see now that I have wanted to be one of the impressive ones You use. But You do not work that way. You choose the small, the overlooked, the person whose only qualification is that he showed up.

Let me show up as that man this week. Not the highlight reel. The real one. Present. Available. You can use that better than a polished version.

Lord Jesus, You chose Bethlehem, not Rome. You chose Galilee, not Jerusalem. Choose me on the same logic. Use me where I am, as I am.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. God chose the lowly things of the world, and the things that are despised, and the things that don’t exist, that he might bring to nothing the things that exist,
    1 Corinthians 1:28
  2. but God chose the foolish things of the world that he might put to shame those who are wise. God chose the weak things of the world that he might put to shame the things that are strong.
    1 Corinthians 1:27
