Dad’s Prayer for October 23rd

A short, Scripture-shaped dads prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, in John 6:67, Jesus asked the twelve, "Will You also go away?" Many followers had just left. It was a hard teaching. Hard to swallow. Peter answered, "Lord, where would we go? You have the words of eternal life."

Peter's answer was not based on a good feeling. It was based on looking around at every other choice and finding nothing better. I have looked too. The other places I might give my life — chasing my career, chasing comfort, staying distracted, trying to look good to others — none of them give what they promise.

Keep me anchored when Your teaching is hard. When You call me to forgive someone who is not sorry. When You call me to give past my comfort. When You call me to tell the truth, even when lying would be easier. There is nowhere better to go. The hardness is not a reason to leave.

Lord Jesus, You have the words of eternal life. Help me stay, especially when staying is harder than going.

Amen.
