Dads
Dad’s Prayer for October 4th
A short, Scripture-shaped dads prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, You promised that at evening time there will be light. That means the last part of life is not dark. It means You are still at work when the day is long, and I am tired.
I think about the men at church in their seventies and eighties. They are not running on empty. There is a quiet light in them that I do not have yet. They have prayed more than I have. They have suffered more. They have forgiven more. They have waited longer. And the result is not weariness. It is brightness.
Make me one of those men. I know there is no shortcut. It is the long road of saying yes to You, day after day, that makes the light. Strengthen me for the middle stretch, where I am now. There is work to face, people to love, and days that feel long. Hold me steady so that my evening time is what You said it would be. Bright.
Lord Jesus, You shine without dimming. Let the small lights You are putting in me now grow into a steady glow I can carry into old age.
Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
