Dad's Prayer for September 21st

A short, Scripture-shaped dads prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, You said You will rejoice over Your people to do them good. You will plant us with Your whole heart and Your whole soul. That is the strongest kind of love there is — and You aim it at me.

I do not let that in. It feels like too much. I am more used to thinking of You as someone who just puts up with me. But You enjoy planting me. You are not bored with me.

Help me sit under that truth for one minute today. Not to force a feeling, but just to let it stand. You delight in doing me good. The good is not always easy, but it is always good. I can stop bracing.

Lord Jesus, You showed us a Father who runs to meet a son coming home. Run toward me today in some small way, I can notice. Let me work this week from the warmth of that, not from the cold of trying to earn a welcome I already have.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
