Dads
Dad’s Prayer for September 20th
A short, Scripture-shaped dads prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, in Judges 7, Gideon’s men broke their jars so the light could shine out. I do not love that picture, because I am the jar.
I work hard to keep myself looking strong and looking like I have it all together. Some of that is fine. But some of it is just hiding. The light You put in me only shows when I crack a little. When I admit I do not know. When I cry in front of someone I love. When I tell a friend I am not okay.
Help me break open in safe places. Not for show, but for real. Let a few people see who I really am inside, and trust You to use that for Your light.
Lord Jesus, You broke for us. Let my small breakings mean something. For connection. For honesty. For someone else to feel less alone.
Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
Verses to pray
Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.
The three companies blew the trumpets, broke the pitchers, and held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands with which to blow; and they shouted, “The sword of Yahweh and of Gideon!”
