Dad’s Prayer for September 3rd

A short, Scripture-shaped dads prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, the bride in the Song of Solomon calls Jesus the one her soul loves. No extra words. Just the one she loves.

I am not always sure I can say that. Some weeks I love You. Some weeks, I love my idea of You. Some weeks, I love what You give me more than I love You. I want to be honest about that.

Train my soul to really love You. Not just a feeling I try to make. But a steady choice. When I see Jesus in the gospels, the way He treated people, the way He would not just say nice things, the way He was willing to die, let that make real love grow in me. Not just quiet respect.

Lord Jesus, You love me. Help me love You back. The way a man loves the truest thing in his life. Let that love change small choices in the next twelve hours.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.

Verses to pray

Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.

  1. Tell me, you whom my soul loves,
    Song of Solomon 1:7
  2. If a man says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who doesn’t love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?
    1 John 4:20
