Dads
Dad’s Prayer for August 29th
A short, Scripture-shaped dads prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Father, I don't start with an explanation. I don't start with a promise to do better. I start with mercy.
I am tired of trying to fix myself before I come to You. So here I am — the patient part, the impatient part, the proud part, the quietly defeated part. Have mercy on me, because of Your great love.
Your mercy doesn't let me off the hook. It's what makes me able to pick the hook back up. Once I receive it, I can apologize. I can work hard. I can love well. I can raise my kids. Without mercy first, all of that is just pretending.
Lord Jesus, You are God's mercy in person. Cover this day with it. Let me work and parent and love under that covering, not under a deal I keep breaking.
Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
