Dad's Prayer for August 28th

A short, Scripture-shaped dads prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, in Exodus 25:8, You told Your people to bring oil for the lamp. The lamp was not the source. It held a flame that needed a steady supply of oil. I am like that lamp. I need oil that I cannot make on my own.

When the oil runs low, I know the signs. Patience gets thin. Empathy fades. I am quick to take offense and quick to give it. I go through the motions at home and at work.

Refill the lamp this morning. Not with something flashy, but by sending me to the ways You provide—Your Word, prayer, Your people, the bread and cup. These are not chores. They are the supply lines that keep the flame alive.

Lord Jesus, You are the light of the world. Let some of that light shine through this small lamp for the next twelve hours. Keep me from spreading darkness with my attitude.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
