Dad’s Prayer for July 4th

A short, Scripture-shaped dads prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.

The prayer

A prayer to pray now

Father, today the country celebrates freedom. I will grill something and watch fireworks with my kids. But under all that, I want to remember a deeper freedom — the slow work You are doing in me that I usually cannot feel.

You said to make us holy through Your truth. That does not happen all at once. It happens over time, as a man becomes more honest, less ruled by anger, less ruled by what he wants, more ruled by love for the people right in front of him. I am not done. In some ways, I have barely started.

Do the work You will do, even when I do not notice. Where I have cut corners this year — small lies, small selfish choices, small times I refused to forgive — show me. Turn me around. Let the freedom we celebrate today be matched by real freedom inside my home.

Lord Jesus, finish what You started in me. I am not asking to be perfect tonight. Just a little more true than I was yesterday.

Amen.

How to pray it

  1. Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
  2. Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
  3. Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
