Dads
Dad's Prayer for February 10th
A short, Scripture-shaped dads prayer for an ordinary moment of Christian faith.
The prayer
A prayer to pray now
Lord, Paul says in Philippians 4:12, "I know how to abound," and that catches me. I always thought being content was hardest when You have little. But Paul says having plenty takes practice, too. Right now, I have some good things. A good year at work. A healthy stretch with my kids. A marriage that is kinder than it was. Do not let me get careless with these gifts. Having too much can wear away my thanks. Help me hold what I have with open hands. Let me enjoy it without gripping it tight. Help me be ready to let it go. Help me be okay with having less. I am not good at this yet. Teach me. Amen.
How to pray it
- Read it slowly. Move through this prayer one line at a time, out loud if you can, letting each phrase land before the next.
- Make it personal. Pause where a line meets your day and name the person, fear, or hope it touches before God.
- Carry it with you. Keep one sentence with you — on your phone or in your pocket — and return to it when the day gets loud.
Verses to pray
Pray these slowly, one line at a time. Scripture quoted from a public-domain translation.
I know how to be humbled, and I also know how to abound. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret both to be filled and to be hungry, both to abound and to be in need.
